چکیده

. \bstrat ' t . A ser ies of 10 chicken f locks placed in areas of southern Nen'Jersey, USA, preceding an epizo<l t ic of eastern equirre encephal i t is (EEE) v i rus fa i led to funct ion adequatelv as sent inels for the outbreak. F,pidemiologicaldata including v i rus isolations from mosquitoes and n'i ld birds, confirmation of'equine deaths due to EEE vi rus, and a conf i rmed humat l case showed that most of the chickens placed in areas rvhere v i rus was knou' t r to be present d id not develop ant ibodv to EEE. Moreover, those that d id develop ant ibody seroconverted late in the epizo<,r t ic per iod. Data suggest that chickens do not funct ion as a warninp; mechanism for EEE vi rus but merelv act as an added indicator of v i rus act iv i ty .

Comparison of chickens and pheasants as sentinels for eastern equine encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis viruses in Florida.

Pheasants and chickens were compared as sentinels for monitoring the transmission of arboviruses of public health significance in Florida during 1991-93. Results suggest that pheasants are better sentinels for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus. They detected virus transmission 3-6 weeks earlier in epizootic years, 2-4 times more frequently during the season, and twice as many birds within...

Equine herds as sentinels for Venezuelan Equine encephalitis virus activity, Nicaragua 1977.

The Central American equine epizootic and epidemic of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) that began in June 1969 near the Guatemala-El Salvador border has been welldocumented (1-S). That outbreak spread southeast, reaching Guanacaste, Costa Rica, by 1970, and north, reaching southern Texas in 1971. The last known cases of equine infection by the exotic equine-virulent subtype I-AB strain of V...

Experimental infection of wading birds with eastern equine encephalitis virus.

To study the susceptibility of wading birds to eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus and to determine their potential as reservoir or amplifying hosts, fledgling glossy ibises (Plegadis falcinellus) and snowy egrets (Egretta thula) were captured in New Jersey (USA) and shipped to Colorado (USA) where they were experimentally inoculated with EEE virus. All 16 snowy egrets and 14 (93%) of 15 of...

Molecular Epidemiology of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus, New York

Perpetuation, overwintering, and extinction of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) in northern foci are poorly understood. We therefore sought to describe the molecular epidemiology of EEEV in New York State during current and past epizootics. To determine whether EEEV overwinters, is periodically reintroduced, or both, we sequenced the E2 and partial NSP3 coding regions of 42 EEEV isolate...

A Quantitative Real-Time RT-PCR Assay for the Detection of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus Utilizing a Universal Alphavirus Control RNA

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is an Alphavirus from the family Togaviridae that causes epizootic outbreaks in equids and humans in Central and South America. So far, most studies use conventional reverse transcriptase PCR assays for the detection of the different VEEV subtypes. Here we describe the development of a TaqMan quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase PCR assay for ...
